Whale
Rock is located just 3km
from the centre of the village, 6km from the Hermanus Golf Club
and 15km from Arabella Golf Club. Hermanus is well know internationally
for it’s wonderful location overlooking the magnificent Walker
Bay. Every year between July and December, the Southern Right
Whales migrate from Antartica to Walker Bay, where they breed
and give birth. These ocean giants will often swim up to within
30 feet of the rocks and clifs overlooking Walker Bay. If you
want to see whales this is as good as it gets from a land based
location.
Hermanus is surrounded by beautiful mountains covered with Fynbos.
You will find wonderful hiking trails and be able to view many
different species of plants and birds. If you want to swim or
just walk on the beach you’ll find it waiting for you in Hermanus.
There are numerous beaches, and miles and miles of unspoiled white
beaches from which to swim or walk.
One of the more unusual attractions in Hermanus is the world’s
only Whale Crier. He sounds his horn to announce where whales
have been sighted. You’ll also find The Old Harbour Museum where
visitors gain an insight into the history of the village. At De
Wet’s Huis Photo Museum there’s a fantastic photographic documentation
of the history and development of the town. You can also find
many boutiques and craft markets in which to shop for that special
South African souvenir.
With all the beauty that surrounds Hermanus and this entire area,
it’s no wonder that many famous artists have been attracted here.
There are a number of galleries that display local and international
work. The beauty and magic of Hermanus have attracted many famous
artists. The town has thus become home to a number of galleries
that house both local and international work.
Remember you can spend weeks in and around the Garden Route area
and not run out of exciting activities. Come to Hermanus, for
that special exciting holiday.
