This boutique hotel is a haven of serenity with a choice of 30 elegant, air-conditioned rooms located in the original Manor House, Jonker's Huis, Barn, Swaaneweide and Spurwing Houses. Each en-suite room is tastefully furnished with exquisite antiques and all rooms overlook the vineyards, golf course or manicured gardens. Amenities on offer to our patrons include an on-site hairstylist and beauty consultant and a gymnasium. Guests can shed their cares and surrender themselves to the quality of personal service, unique to a small luxury hotel. Steenberg is an ideal starting point for day excursions to some of the Cape's other attractions.
Each house has a different gable, reflecting different building periods. Guests staying in specific houses are not bound to only those facilities as we encourage guests to roam around and experience all that Steenberg has to offer.
THE RESTORED BARN
The patio overlooks the mountain and forest, facing west for lovely afternoon sun. Well-appointed bathrooms with timber or tile floors. All fabrics used in this house are light and fresh. A central lounge offers guests relaxation from the normal rush of the day. Reception is situated in this building.
THE MANOR HOUSE
This original farmhouse is the oldest building on
the Estate, dating back to 1682. Beautiful antiques and ornaments reflect
the elegant style of the 17th and 18th centuries. There are two lounges;
one decorated in the traditional Cape Dutch fashion with fireplace. It has
copies of the transfer deeds signed by Simon Van der Stel displayed on the
wall. The other lounge is situated in the original farm kitchen adjacent
to the formal vegetable garden. (The gable of the building is a traditional "convex-concave" design
- the only example in the country.) The large dining room table reflects
the importance of family mealtimes in days gone by. The well-polished original
yellowwood floor provides the house with a homely atmosphere.
JONKER'S HUISE
The name of the building, directly translated from
Afrikaans, is "Young Man's house". This was the house which the oldest son
moved into after his marriage, but still a stone's throw away from the family
home - the Manor House. Each room is individually decorated and provides
every modern convenience. The central lounge, with fireplace and comfortable
furniture, opens onto a patio overlooking the vineyards. This is an east-facing
building and therefore receives the morning sun. Quality reading material
is available throughout the house. Challenge your partner to a game of chess
or backgammon or your house neighbour to a game of bridge.
LUXURY DINING
Catharina Ustings, the first owner of Steenberg, lives on through the nuances
of Catharina's. Experience the captivation of flavors - tempestuous, exotic,
contemporary & delectable. A fresh & innovated blend of classical cuisine amidst
ageless splendour.
Rich dark wood, antique carpets, oak furnishings and display dressers filled with original Spode crockery create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Being an old wine cellar, cosy dining alcoves have been created in the original vats. Both the main dining area and the cigar lounge feature fireplaces. A section of the original wine storage areas have been turned into small wine cellars, keeping the more than 80 different wines on offer at optimum temperatures. These mini cellars form part of the restaurant and can be viewed whilst dining, giving guests the feeling of dining in a cellar.
The breakfast conservatory offers all weather dining in the intimate surroundings of sun dappled vineyards and gardens. Full a la carte and Continental breakfast menus available.
The cigar lounge offers an idea venue for a pre-dinner aperitif or a cigar and cognac after a perfect meal.
