Game Drives

As part of the game drives, guests will be able to visit the Mokwalo site (Tswana for "engravings"), renowned for its Bushman history. The site is from the later Stone Age and guests may examine tools from this period, as well as San engravings and one of the most developed group of cupules in the world.

Bush Walking Trails

Feel at one with nature and walk the trail with Tswalu's experienced field guides and trackers and share the environment with Tswalu's multiplicity of wildlife.The Kalahari region is not only very beautiful, but also fascinating, with the red sand dunes and bleached veld competing for admiration.

Along the trail, Tswalu's Rangers and Trackers will give an insight into the absorbing world of the smaller creatures inhabiting this stunning area of the Kalahari and reveal their nests and holes. They will also demonstrate practical knowledge of some of the bush medicines, cosmetics and hunting skills used by the San people. The walking trail is offered as an alternative to a game drive.

Sundowners

At twilight, as day surrenders to night and the setting sun ignites the evening sky, guests are served sundowners around a camp fire, on the crest of a dune, surrounded by amazing views on every side. The braai kindled, the food delicious and the scene captivating - a perfect way to end a perfect day before the night drive back to Tswalu's Motse (main lodge) for dinner.

Horse Back Safaris

As well as game drives and walking safaris, guests may explore the plains and dune of Tswalu on horseback for a bush experience unlike any other. Ride close to a group of giraffe and watch in wonder as they perform their graceful ballet against the backdrop of a deep blue sky, or catch sight of a mighty, rushing herd of wildebeest.

Tswalu's horses are suitable for beginners and experienced riders and range from 14.3 to 16.3 hands high. Breeds include the locally bred Boerperd, crossbred Fresians and Saddlers, Appaloosas, Quarter horses and thoroughbreds. The saddles used are English and Trail riding saddles and mainly snuffle bridles.

Extra horse riding activities are planned with a 7 night horseback safari staying at fly camps across the safari.

All rides are accompanied by a qualified riding instructor and an experienced ranger to ensure guests enjoy a safe and informative experience. Horseback riding is not included in the accommodations rate.

Golf

Sishen Golf Course is situated on the outskirts of the town of Kathu in the Northern Cape Province. The course winds its way through a 500 hectare Camelthorn forest on the edge of the Kalahari Desert and its lush green fairways and greens have surprised many a visitor to this arid region.

The par 72, 18-hole course is currently rated in the top 20 best golf courses in South Africa and is truly a hidden gem. It annually hosts the Kalahari Classic, the 2nd stop on the winter leg of the Vodacom Southern African Tour. This 54-hole tournament has proven to be extremely popular over the years and has been won by pros such as AP Botes, Sean Pappas and Des Terblanche. The club also hosts the 72-hole Griqualand West Open each year, which is one of the more prestigious events on the Amateur calendar.

The course is 6450 meters in length and has a rating of 72. Water comes into play on the 6th, 9th and 18th holes with the magnificent Camelthorn ready to ensnare any stray shots.

Sishen Golf Club is approx. 1 hour 15 minutes drive from Tswalu and transfers, accompanied by a Tswalu ranger, can be organized. Tswalu has a CAA licensed tar runway that can accommodate corporate jets such as Gulf Stream, Falcon, BA146 etc. and Kathu's runway is a 10 minute drive from Sishen Golf Club.
